  3. Hi Dennis,

What OS are you running? Is this a company PC that is being controlled by IT or is this a home box? It sounds like something is either up with your Windows Update Client or one of the patches is having issues with your machine.

One way I’ve fixed the problem is just by visiting the Windows Update site – http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/. This will scan you box and update the Windows Update Client on your computer. If that doesn’t work, I would install these updates manually by downloading them off the Microsoft site then installing them 1 at a time manually. For instance, you can get this update – kb955470 from the link above – http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/info.aspx?na=22&p;=17&SrcDisplayLang;=en&SrcCategoryId;=&SrcFamilyId;=&u;=%2Fdownloads%2Fdetails.aspx%3FFamilyID%3D2765bbc0-ea2e-4b6e-822c-222ee8e5021f%26DisplayLang%3Den

Hopefully if one of them is causing the problem and you get it installed, it might get you over the hump.

Let me know what works (or not)!

    Thanks,

  5. Art…thanks for your response…I have auto update installed, so get everything all the time. I went to the website from your link above, and it scanned my system…identified the same 7 updates that I cannot install…tried installing just one, but that failed. Running XP Pro on my home system (Dell Demension 8300…old, but reliable). Never had this problem before, and have not installed anything new on my system. Run Kaspersky for virus/firewall protection.

  7. Hmm… Do you have any errors in your event logs? Click Start – Run then type eventvwr .

    1) Look in the System and App logs for errors to perhaps give you a clue as to why the updates are failing.

    2) Take a look at your c:windowswindowsupdate.log file

The log file is where Windows Update writes all it’s events. If there is a file, it usually spells it out is pretty good English WHY it’s failing. So just try to do the installs, when it fails open up the .log file with Notepad or any other .txt editor and goto the bottom of the file. From there you should be good.

    3) Are you running the latest service pack? SP3 is out for XP so you might try that. It’s kinda the NUKE bomb but if you don’t get any clues from the Logs, that’s another option.
