  1. I downloaded the MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB954430) on November 11, 2008. Then on November 12, I had a problem with the Sprint Smartmove software and attempted to reinstall it. But I was not able to do this. The reapplication almost finished but suddenly stopped and then uninstalled itself. It gave a message something similar to “…the process was suddenly interrupted and will be rolled back”. I have tried several times to reinstall the software but to no avail. Sprint told me that it was not in their software. I am wondering if it is related to the Microsoft Update on November 11.
    Any clues?

  3. @Michael,

Well… The timing does appear to point to the Update you made on 11/11. Have you tried a system restore prior to the Update on 11/11? Might try that then perform the re-install of the sprint software.

    Keep us updated.

  5. I downloaded this update with other availible important ones after windows update automatically found them on its usual run. I downloaded all and installed all except this one. Till now i have a problem in installing it, all my questions to support sites and forums gave me nothing in response, though as i found out many users of Vista (expecially Home Premium, as myself) are expiriencing the same problem, and getting the same error code (641) after failed installation of this Security Pack. Please, if someone has any idea of solving this installation problem-let me now, appreciate in advance.
    With regards. Temir.

  7. Thanks. Actually I found another program after I left this post that had created a conflict with the Sprint Software. Thanks for the advice though.

  9. I tried all known methods of solving installation of this update and all of them failed. Finally i made up my mind not to install this update at all, cause it is not the first case with some windows updates. Besides i do not much care about hackers attacks, i am sure i can handle any without using this corrupt update.

  25. @Olympia – If you take a look at the KB – http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=954430 the security update applies to almost all Microsoft OS’s.

That being said, you should probably apply BUT, personally I would just visit Windows update and if the site tells you that you need to apply the update, go for it. If not, don’t install it from the manual installer.

@ Jennifer – Make sure your installing the right update. To safely install, I would try to uninstall it, reboot then hit windows update and let it install it for you.

  27. @Olimpia, @Jennifer- Get rid of that update as soon as possible, you can get nothing useful out of it except extra problems. A lot of people are still having problems with this update, but the clever ones got rid of it once and for all long ago.

  29. I tried what Steve suggested and it didn’t work. Maybe because I’m on Vista? Anyway, it’s up to 93 times it has installed “successfully”. I checked to see if I could uninstall it so I could start over, and it doesn’t show that it was installed. This is making me crazy.

  31. We also have this problem with the update installing 10 times … foolishly, I manually installed it from the Microsoft update’s website thinking the automatic update was not working … it told me after installing, that once installed, it can not be uninstalled … now what?

  33. I don’t know if this will work for everyone but I am running Vista 64 bit and I had the same issue…. installed the same thing about 20 times.
What i did was “uncheck” the update then i right clicked the update and selected “hide”. After that two new (but different) updates were required (restarts after each) and now my computer says its up-to-date…. thank god..
    Hope this helps

  37. I wrote here last year about my problems with this update. Since then i had no problems, and i just lately discovered that on 25 th of january this update together with some others was sucessfully installed on my PC without even my noticing that.

  39. Now this is weird, I did what Wally suggested by unchecking and hiding the update KB954430. That seemed to work because it quit installing it over and over (up to 120 times). Now it is doing the same thing with another update KB936181. That one was supposed to install back in 6/24/08. When I looked at the update history in Windows Updates , that one doesn’t show up as being installed. Now it is installing over and over.

When I look at my Programs and Features in the Control Panel, it doesn’t show either one of them having been installed. Grrrrr

  41. I suppose the problem of installing this update has something to do with security settings (at least in my case). As i uninstalled Norton Internet Security suite (which failed to detect a trojan horse) and installed PC Tools security suite on 24 th of january and next day this update installed without any problems.

  43. I found the cure, at least for me. After I would uncheck and hide various updates that kept popping up, a new one every time I hid one of the other ones (that had already updated over and over). I went back and uninstalled my Kodak Easyshare software. That was the only program I had installed since the problem started back in late November. Wa-la! It stopped all the repeated Windows Updates and everything is working perfectly. I’m getting all the new updates without problems. It even fixed an issue I was having with my anti-virus software that wouldn’t automatically update itself, I had to manually do it and ignore messages saying it couldn’t connect to the server. That’s all fixed too!

  47. I had the same problem i.e. repeated install of 954430. I got into bulletins and was told that there could be a conflict with a previous update. I finally uninstalled the previous 2 updates (one was 958644), and 954430 successfuly installed complete and no more notices to update. Might work for you. I found 18 pages of problems people were having with 958644.

  49. Jack, I didn’t reinstall the Kodak Easyshare, I was afraid to. It felt so good having all my problems disappear. I didn’t really need it as I have Adobe photoshop and use that instead. I saw in another blog on this site somebody having the same problem with KB936181 reinstalling and their solution was to uninstall their Kodak Easyshare software.

  75. I am going to try this. I have had nothing but problems since installing the Kodak Easyshare software. Including not being able to use IT! Fortunately I have another computer that I didn't install that software on and I can retrieve photos from my Kodak camera just fine without their lousy software. The camera is great though. They just need to stick with making cameras and forget the software end of it. They don't know what they're doing! Amateurs.

  79. @Mark,
I have the same problem with the Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 for x64-based Systems (KB954430)
update. I have a new HP laptop with Windows 7 64 bit. Since Dec 15 it has installed the update 66 times. Any help or link to a solution at Microsofts site would be appreciated.
